BLBGs New President
The Belgian Luxemburg Business Group (BLBG) in Singapore announced on Thursday 16 September that Erik Jonnaert, vice president for Procter & Gamble Asia, has been appointed president of the BLBG succeeding Mr Bing Houw Tan, managing director of Asia Pacific QBian Retail Research.

During the BLBG annual reception in Singapore, Mr Jonnaert acknowledged the contributions of Mr Houw Tan during his past presidency, who has been able to relaunch a small but successful group of Belgian business leaders, based in Singapore, to become a effective forum for networking and intelligence gathering on the Singapore and Asia business environment.

"I am looking forward to build upon the foundations set by Bing Houw Tan, to make the BLBG an even more attractive forum for networking", commented Erik Jonnaert; "we should not only continue focusing on the Belgian & Luxemburg business community but make sure we integrate this small community even more effectively within the fabric of the Singapore business community and the other European business organisations represented through Eurocham." Belgium is currently holding the presidency of the European Union and is one of the founding members of the current European Union. "We should leverage Belgium’s multi cultural diversity and it’s leadership role within the European Union, to strengthen connections for the Belgian and Luxemburg business community in Singapore." continued Erik Jonnaert; "there are lot’s of similarities between Belgium and Singapore, which should help to bring the business communities from both countries even closer together."

Erik Jonnaert graduated from the University of Ghent Law School ( Belgium) and from Harvard Law School (USA); he joined Procter & Gamble in Belgium more than 25 years ago; he moved to Singapore in 2008 to join Procter & Gamble’s Asia management team, with responsibility for public relations, corporate communications, government relations, regulatory affairs and consumer relations across P&G’s business units in Asia Pacific. Erik is married to Karin Moelaert and has 3 sons, one of whom is also in Singapore.

Partnership Opportunities with SPRING Singapore's International Partnership Division
Dear Mr Tan,

We are pleased to inform you that SPRING Singapore has set up a new International Partnership Division that aims to forge collaboration between local and foreign SMEs. As a strategic business partner of SPRING, SICC has been invited to refer promising and established foreign SMEs that are based in Singapore to the agency.

Among the several thousands of SMEs in Singapore, we believe that there are many foreign SMEs that would like to seek partnerships with local SMEs to grow their businesses. For instance, some of your SMEs could be wanting to find business partners to venture into the Middle East or, to undertake joint product development. SPRING will be able to assist by evaluating the business interests of your SMEs and where possible, linking your SMEs to the local SMEs in Singapore that have similar interests. You may wish to note that SPRING\’s focus on SME partnerships does not apply to finding buyers and sellers for SMEs.

In this regard, we would like to invite the Belgian Luxembourg Business Association of Singapore to leverage on SPRING\’s support to assist SMEs from your country. There is no industry preference in identifying suitable SMEs that SPRING may assist but for a start, SPRING is keen to assist companies that are in the following industries:

· Precision Engineering
· Biomedical/Healthcare
· Oil & Gas
· F&B manufacturing

Should you have a list of interested SMEs, we welcome you to email the list (including company name, contact details of representative and a brief company profile) to jasmine@sicc.com.sg or shirley@sicc.com.sg

We will submit the list to SPRING for their perusal.

Should you have any queries, please feel free to get in touch with Ms Jasmine Ng or Ms Shirley Teo at the email addresses stated above or, at tel: 6500 0973 or 6500 0966.

Thank you and Best regards

Shirley Teo

Up or down, V or W who knows anymore?
Dear Captains and Officers,

Singapore is officially out of the recession, so I read in the newspapers a week or so ago, an evolution we can only applaud of course but doesn’t come without some reservations. The statement is obviously based on measurable macro-economic data and criteria, but an economic downturn in its causes and effects is multi-dimensional, such as there are consumer confidence and spending behaviour, industry-specifics, geographical influences etc… I’m not a theoretical economist by all means, but common sense tells me to take this happy news with the reasonable amount of caution .. and so do some experts (they would know, wouldn’t they as for every expert there seems to be a counter expert, so what’s the use actually?). The sentiment index (how on earth do they measure one’s sentiment) seems to be on the same level as it was pre-crisis in 2007, this short “after” the crisis. So what does that tell us? That we’re in for another crisis? That the crisis was just a hoax (tell that to the xx thousands of people who lost their jobs)? That self-fulfilling prophecy is an eternal economic theory? Somehow it’s not unlike our Red Devils; crisis followed by a win against the Turkish which resulted in euphoria which was answered with a loss to Estonia, the mighty football nation of the Baltic’s. Anyone that dares telling me with a straight face what’s going to happen next is either a selfdeclared psychic or takes himself way too serious, both of them are in dire need of a reality check, you choose. Was there ever a more symbolic time to open up the integrated resorts?

Per instruction of our board, we have started exploring on what the criteria are to become a full-blown Belgian Chamber of Commerce, both by name, administration and constitution. Currently we’re just in an informative and research phase. Although there are some clear advantages on becoming one, there are also some points to consider from an organisational and financial point of view. As ever the main criteria will be on how we can best represent our members and more information about those plans will be communicated as they will form and shape along the way.

In the light of the Shuman lecture which is one of the highlight events of EuroCham, former Prime minister of Italy and former President of the European Commission Mr. Romano Prodi has been invited to Singapore to be the key note speaker during this gala evening. The event will take place on December 7th 2009 and tables or chairs are available for purchase for our members. Please contact me for further information.

We’re about to kick of a new series of Lunch & Talks. Each of these sessions will be focussed on 1 Asian country. For our first L&T we will have the economic advisor from Vietnam, more information will follow later.
As always, hope to meet you soon at one of our events!

Dearest regards,
Tan Bing Houw
